Foundation uplift caused by freezing
In Quebec, the ground is affected by extreme temperature variations. The alternation of periods of freezing and thawing changes the density and volume of land elements. If your foundation appears to be lifting, changing slope, warping laterally or vertically, you could be affected by an uplift caused by freezing.
The possible causes are:
- A foundation established at too shallow a depth
- A humid floor that sticks to the sole or basement walls
- A basement that is over-insulated from the inside
The source and the cause of the warping must be pinpointed because if no action is taken, the foundations, and even your entire home, can be severely damaged.
There are several solutions possible:
- Correct the slope of the land
- Repair or replace areas that are too damaged
- Inspect the drainage system and French drain
- Install extruded polystyrene to keep the foundations warm
- Replace the fill with sand or crushed stone
